National Thai Language Day is observed in Thailand every July 29. This cultural observance was established in 1999, with the date chosen to commemorate King Bhumibol Adulyadej's visit to Chulangkorn University's Faculty of Arts in 1962, where he discussed the proper use of Thai language. The Thai language, native to over 50 million speakers in Thailand and neighboring countries, is regulated by the Royal Institute of Thailand, with Standard Thai based on the dialect spoken by Bangkok's educated classes. Although it is not a public holiday, the Thai government promotes the observance to highlight the importance of using the Thai language correctly and preserving local dialects. Despite these efforts, many citizens remain unaware of National Thai Language Day.
