Pachamama Raymi is an annual traditional festival celebrated in Ecuador and Peru every August 1. This festival, which translates from Quechua as "Mother Earth feast," involves locals expressing gratitude to Mother Earth, or Pachamama, through various customs. Celebrated primarily in the Ecuadorian province of Zamora-Chinchipe and the Cusco Region of Peru, farmers halt their work to allow the earth to rest and offer cooked crops as offerings, burying the food in the ground to feed Pachamama. The ceremony is led by an Andean priest known as a "Pako." In addition to these rituals, participants engage in traditional songs, dances, and events such as textile exhibitions and bullfights, attracting tourists and promoting Andean culture. Although many no longer believe in ancient deities, the festival remains a significant cultural observance that fosters harmony between humans and nature. The festival also inspired a rural development methodology aimed at combating poverty and environmental degradation through community engagement and innovation in agriculture.
