Minden Day is observed in the United Kingdom every August 1 and commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Minden, which took place on August 1, 1759, during the Seven Years' War. This day is celebrated by several regiments of the British Army, known as "the Minden regiments," which include the Royal Artillery. The battle was significant as an Anglo-German army defeated a French-Saxon army. On Minden Day, soldiers from these regiments traditionally wear roses in their headdress, a practice that recalls the wild roses they picked from German gardens as they advanced to battle. The color of the roses varies by unit, with most wearing red roses, while Light Infantry units wear white roses. Additionally, since 1975, August 1 has also been recognized as Yorkshire Day, honoring the participation of the 51st Regiment of Foot in the battle.
