Our Lady of the Angels Day is a public holiday celebrated in Costa Rica every August 2. This day honors Virgen de los Angeles, the patron saint of Costa Rica, commemorating the discovery of a small stone statuette of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus by a peasant girl in 1635. The statuette, which miraculously returned to its original location after being taken, led to the construction of the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in Cartago, completed in 1924. The original statue, affectionately known as La Nergita or Queen of Cartago, is housed at the basilica's main altar. On this day, pilgrims from across the country travel to Cartago to visit the basilica, making it a significant religious observance in Costa Rica. The Virgin of the Angels was officially declared the country's patron saint in 1824, and this anniversary has since been recognized as a public holiday.
