Friendship Day is an informal holiday observed worldwide on every August 2. It was first proposed by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards, in 1919, with the idea of celebrating friendships through the exchange of greeting cards. Although the holiday initially gained traction in the 1920s, it faded in the US by the 1940s due to perceptions of it being a commercial ploy. However, the rise of social media has revitalized interest in the holiday, particularly in countries like Malaysia, Bangladesh, and India, as well as parts of South America. On this day, friends typically exchange greeting cards, gifts, and friendship bands to commemorate their relationships. Additionally, the United Nations established an International Day of Friendship, observed on July 30, which is separate from the informal Friendship Day celebrations.
