Capoeirista Day, also known as Capoeira Day, is observed every August 3, primarily in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, but also celebrated unofficially across Brazil and by capoeira practitioners worldwide. This holiday was established in 1985 to recognize the cultural significance of capoeira, a martial art that originated among African slaves in Brazil, combining elements of acrobatics, dance, and music. Events on this day typically include presentations, demonstrations, and workshops organized by capoeira schools, cultural centers, and social projects, aimed at promoting the martial art and encouraging participation. Capoeira has a rich history, having evolved from Engolo, a ritual combat tradition from Angola, and it faced a ban after the abolition of slavery in Brazil in 1888, only to be legalized in 1940. The cultural importance of capoeira was further acknowledged in 2014 when it was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
