The International Day of Awareness of the Special Development Needs and Challenges of Landlocked Developing Countries is observed worldwide every August 6. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2025, this day highlights the unique challenges faced by landlocked developing countries (LLDCs), which are nations without coastlines on the world ocean. Of the 44 landlocked countries globally, 32 are classified as LLDCs, including 16 in Africa, 10 in Asia, 4 in Europe, and 2 in South America. The observance aims to draw attention to issues such as high transport and trade costs, dependence on transit countries, and the economic disadvantages stemming from geographical isolation. This isolation can hinder integration into global trade and make these countries vulnerable to disruptions in essential goods imports. The day serves as a platform to emphasize the need for support and solutions to improve the development prospects of LLDCs.
