Severe ME Awareness Day, observed worldwide every August 8, aims to honor those who have suffered from severe myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and to advocate for better treatment and research. The day was established by the 25 Percent ME Group, a UK support organization, in 2013, coinciding with the birthday of Sophia Mirza, a British woman who experienced severe ME and died from complications of the illness. Mirza's case highlighted the challenges faced by patients, including misdiagnosis and inadequate medical care. Severe ME affects approximately 25% of patients, rendering them almost completely housebound and in need of constant care. The observance seeks to educate the public about the debilitating nature of severe ME, which can lead to severe pain, cognitive decline, and other serious health issues.
