National Reporter’s Day, also known as National Journalist’s Day, is observed in Iran every August 8. This day commemorates the memory of Mahmoud Saremi, an Iranian journalist who was assassinated in Afghanistan in 1998 during a Taliban attack on the Iranian consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif. The attack resulted in the deaths of several Iranian diplomats and Saremi, who was the head of the Islamic Republic News Agency's office in the city. In recognition of his sacrifice, the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution declared this date as National Reporter’s Day. On this day, Iranian journalists receive congratulations for their professional contributions, although the celebration is often viewed as hypocritical due to the extensive media censorship in the country. Iran is known for its repressive environment for journalists, ranking low on the Press Freedom Index and having the highest number of jailed journalists in the Middle East.
