National Peacekeepers' Day is observed in Canada every August 9, commemorating Canadian veterans of military peacekeeping activities. The date was chosen to honor the nine Canadian peacekeepers who were killed on August 9, 1974, during a mission in Syria, marking the deadliest incident in Canada's peacekeeping history. To recognize this event, Peacekeeper Park in Calgary, Alberta, features a memorial wall listing the names of all Canadian Forces members who have died on peacekeeping missions since World War II. Additionally, the Buffalo Nine monument in Buffalo Park commemorates the same tragic event, incorporating a propeller from the downed aircraft and a stone marker. National Peacekeepers' Day was first introduced in August 1993 and became an official national day in Canada through federal legislation in June 2003.
