Absorgender

Absorgender is a gender identity where an individual absorbs gender characteristics from those around them, adding these genders to their own until a “maximum” is reached. At this point, their identity becomes a blank state, reverting to a basic gender. This foundational gender could be any identity, including agender, and may vary each time. The absorbed genders remain even when people are no longer present. For some, certain genders are easier to absorb, and they may use the prefix “absor-” for specific genders, like absorgirl or absorboy.

Jordan identifies as absorgender and has always felt that their gender builds upon interactions with others. When surrounded by friends who identify as feminine and non-binary, Jordan feels those elements added to their gender identity. Even after those friends leave, the sense of being part feminine and non-binary stays. Over time, Jordan reaches a point where their gender feels full and complex, and they eventually revert to a neutral state. For Jordan, this base gender sometimes feels masculine, other times agender. One evening, while reflecting on their experiences, Jordan explained, “It’s like my identity gathers these pieces from everyone I connect with, building layers until I need a reset.” There’s been some criticism, though, as absorgender can imply that gender is assessed by outward appearances. However, for Jordan, it’s about internal resonance rather than assumptions. This identity contrasts with echogender, where the feeling is temporary and fades after leaving others’ presence. Absorgender is cumulative, capturing a deeper connection that spans past and present influences.

An important difference between absorgender and echogender is that with echogender, the gender experience is temporary and changes after an interaction, while with absorgender, genders accumulate and persist from the past.

Note: There is criticism of this gender identity because it implies that one can assess the gender of people around them based on external characteristics.
