Alicopolya is a term on the Ethical Non Monogamy (ENM) spectrum. It describes someone who knows they belong somewhere within the ENM spectrum but does not fit into any specific ENM label. This can also describe someone who has not yet figured out which label best reflects their experience. The identity leaves room for exploration and flexibility, allowing people to recognise their place within the spectrum without committing to a precise term.

The Alicopolya flag takes its colours from the original polyamorous flag, with white added from the ENM flag. The inclusion of white represents being part of the ENM spectrum while remaining open to various expressions within it. The term was coined by Tumblr user a1ly on November 13, 2022. Its name combines the Greek inspired prefix Alico meaning “somewhere” or “elsewhere” with a reference to polyamory.

Alicopolya can be a temporary identity for those still exploring, or a lasting label for those who prefer not to be defined by one specific form of non monogamy. It emphasises personal choice and self knowledge rather than strict categorisation.

Jordan had been reading about ethical non monogamy for months. Words like polyamorous, relationship anarchist, and open relationship kept appearing, but none felt like the perfect match. Each label seemed to explain part of their experience but left something out.

One night Jordan stumbled on a post about Alicopolya. The idea of recognising themselves as part of the spectrum without having to pin down an exact label felt like a relief. It was an open space rather than a fixed box. The flag’s colours also resonated, symbolising connection and belonging without losing personal freedom.

Over time, Jordan realised they might never want to settle on a more specific ENM label. Being Alicopolya felt like having permission to be in motion, to keep learning about themselves and their relationships without pressure. When friends asked what it meant, Jordan explained, “It’s like knowing the neighbourhood you live in, even if you have not chosen your exact street yet.”
