Allosexual

Allo- (orientation), LGBTQ-alphabet, Sexual Orientation and Attraction

Allosexual refers to individuals who experience regular and consistent sexual attraction. This term encompasses those who do not identify on the asexual spectrum and have typical experiences of sexual desire and attraction. Allosexuality serves as a contrast to asexuality and helps highlight the diversity of sexual experiences. It includes people across all sexual orientations who naturally feel sexual attraction.

Khalid always assumed that everyone experienced attraction in the same way he did. Growing up, conversations about crushes and physical attraction seemed universal, something he shared with friends and family. However, his friend Amir, who came out as asexual, shared that he didn’t experience attraction in the way Khalid did. Curious, Khalid asked more, and Amir explained, “There’s a term for people who do feel regular sexual attraction; allosexual.” The word was new to Khalid, but it opened his eyes to the spectrum of experiences that existed. “So, I’m allosexual?” Khalid asked, realizing that he fit into that category naturally. Amir nodded, appreciating Khalid’s interest and empathy. This conversation led Khalid to better understand and support Amir’s identity while giving him the language to describe his own. Recognizing that he was allosexual helped Khalid see the value in understanding others’ perspectives, fostering more meaningful connections with friends who experienced attraction differently. This newfound awareness also encouraged him to engage in more inclusive conversations about sexuality and identity.
