Amorgender is a form of gender fluidity where an individual’s gender identity shifts when they are in the presence of someone with whom they have developed a deep bond. This could be due to romantic attraction, a close platonic relationship, spiritual affinity, or other significant connections. The influence on gender identity doesn’t have to stem from romantic love; it could be triggered by being around a best friend or a person with whom one shares a profound understanding. Individuals who identify as amorgender may also identify as transgender or non-binary.

Santiago always felt that their gender was influenced by the people they were closest to. When spending time with Elena, their best friend from childhood, Santiago noticed their sense of self becoming more neutral and relaxed. In contrast, when they were around Javier, their partner, they felt a stronger alignment with masculinity. At first, this fluctuation was confusing, but Santiago discovered the term amorgender while exploring gender identities online. “This is exactly how I feel,” Santiago thought. They shared this realization with Elena during one of their late-night chats. “My gender shifts based on who I’m with, and it’s not just about romance; it’s about connection,” Santiago explained. Elena smiled knowingly, saying, “That makes sense; you’ve always seemed to change in subtle ways depending on who you’re around.” Understanding their identity as amorgender gave Santiago clarity and helped them embrace these shifts as a natural part of who they were. It allowed them to appreciate how deeply personal connections could shape their experience of gender, making their journey richer and more authentic.
