April 12: Scouts’ Day

Scouts’ Day, also known as Plastun Day, is observed in Ukraine every April 12 to commemorate the founding of Plast, the country's oldest and largest Scouting organization. The day marks the anniversary of the oath taken by about 40 Scouts in 1912, led by Oleksander Tysovsky, who established the first Scouting group in Lviv. Plast has its roots in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and has faced various challenges, including bans during the Soviet era, yet it continued to thrive among the Ukrainian diaspora. Following Ukraine's independence, Scouting reemerged, leading to the formation of the National Organization of Scouts of Ukraine in 2007, which includes Plast along with other organizations. Celebrations typically involve various activities that honor the history and contributions of Scouting in Ukraine.
