Born on April 14, 1891, Ambedkar campaigned against untouchability and advocated for the rights of the marginalized, particularly those from the Mahar caste. Following India's independence in 1947, he became the first Minister of Law and Justice and was instrumental in legally abolishing the practice of untouchability. On this day, citizens participate in solemn ceremonies at statues of Ambedkar across various towns and cities in India. Although it is a public holiday in all Indian states, it is not recognized as a federal holiday.
