April 16: Healthcare Decisions Day / Advance Care Planning Day

National Healthcare Decisions Day, also known as Advance Care Planning Day in Canada, is observed every April 16 to inspire, educate, and empower individuals about the importance of advance care planning. Established in 2008 by Virginia-based healthcare lawyer Nathan Kottkamp, this observance aims to provide clear and consistent information about healthcare decision-making and to offer simple tools for guiding this process. The event is managed by The Conversation Project in the United States and the Advance Care Planning Canada initiative, led by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association. The primary goal is to encourage patients to express their healthcare wishes and ensure that families and healthcare providers respect those wishes. Events are organized by various healthcare facilities and community organizations, including drugstores and places of worship, to highlight the significance of advance healthcare decision-making. Despite over 90% of Americans acknowledging the importance of discussing healthcare decisions, only 32% have had such conversations, underscoring the need for initiatives like this.
