April 17: Fire Service Day (Kazakhstan)

Fire Service Day is observed in Kazakhstan every April 17, commemorating the 1918 Decree on State Firefighting Measures issued by the Council of People’s Commissars. This professional holiday is celebrated within the Ministry of Emergency Situations, which oversees fire safety through the Fire Service Committee. The State Fire Service, regulated by the Law on Fire Safety, is responsible for developing and implementing fire safety policies, organizing fire prevention and extinguishing efforts, and ensuring state control in this field. Volunteer fire brigades also play a crucial role by conducting fire safety checks and educating employees about fire safety. One significant event in the history of fire safety in Kazakhstan was the Transport Tower fire in 2006, which required the efforts of 148 firefighters to extinguish. Unlike other former Soviet republics, Kazakhstan retains the tradition of celebrating Fire Service Day on April 17, while other countries have different observance dates.
