Verrazzano Day is observed every April 17 in New York state and the Italian town of Greve in Chianti, commemorating the discovery of New York Harbor by the Florentine explorer Giovanni de Verrazzano. This day marks the anniversary of Verrazzano's arrival in New York Bay in 1524, where he named the area New Angoulême in honor of King Francis I. Celebrations typically include various events held at the Castle of Verrazzano in Greve, which has been owned by the Capellini family since 1958. The observance recognizes Verrazzano as the first documented European explorer to reach New York Harbor, a distinction that was historically overshadowed by Henry Hudson. Notably, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York, named after him, originally featured a misspelling of his name, which was corrected in 2018.
