April 18: Scouts’ Day

Scouts’ Day is observed in Armenia every April 18, celebrating the anniversary of the National Scout Movement of Armenia's admission to the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1997. The roots of Scouting in Armenia trace back to the early 20th century, with the first Armenian Scout troops established in orphanages in Van. The movement faced a ban during the Soviet era, leading to its development primarily among the Armenian diaspora in countries like Bulgaria, Egypt, and Lebanon. The Association of Armenian Scouts, known as Haï Ari, was founded in Paris in 1924 and was recognized by the World Organization in 1929. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Scout movement was revived in Armenia, culminating in the formation of the National Scout Movement in 1994. Today, it boasts over two thousand members and is part of both the World Organization and the Eurasian Scout Region. Additionally, Armenia has the National Union of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides, along with various expatriate Scout groups.
