April 20: Evacuee Flag Day (Finland)

Evacuee Flag Day (Evakkojen liputuspäivä) is observed in Finland every April 20 to honor those affected by the evacuation of Finnish Karelia and Lapland during the Winter War, the Continuation War, and the Lapland War. This day commemorates approximately 440,000 people who were permanently evacuated and nearly 200,000 who were temporarily displaced during Finland's conflicts. The Karelian Association (Karjalan Liitto), founded in 1940 to protect the interests of Karelian evacuees, initiated this observance, with the first official celebration occurring in 2025. The date was chosen to coincide with the association's founding anniversary. Initially, requests to establish an official flag-flying day were rejected, but in 2025, the Ministry of the Interior recommended April 20 as a flag-flying day, acknowledging the resilience and contributions of Karelian evacuees in rebuilding Finland after the wars.
