April 21: Kartini Day (Indonesia)

Kartini Day, also known as Women Emancipation Day, is observed in Indonesia every April 21 to commemorate Raden Ajeng Kartini, the first Indonesian feminist and a national heroine. Born on April 21, 1879, into an aristocratic Javanese family, Kartini was allowed to attend school and learned to speak Dutch, but had to leave at the age of 12. Despite this, she continued to educate herself and became interested in women's emancipation and social issues in Indonesia. In 1903, she entered into an arranged marriage, during which her husband supported her efforts to establish a school for women. Kartini passed away on September 17, 1904, after giving birth to her son, and her letters to European friends were later published as "Out of the Darkness Comes Light." Kartini Day was established in 1964 by Sukarno, the first President of Indonesia, to honor her legacy.
