April 21: San Jacinto Day (United States)

San Jacinto Day is observed in Texas every April 21 to commemorate the final battle of the Texas Revolution, which resulted in Texas gaining de facto independence from Mexico. The day marks the victory of Texian forces under General Sam Houston over Mexican troops led by General Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. Following a surprise attack, the Texians overwhelmed the Mexican soldiers in just 18 minutes, leading to significant casualties and the capture of Santa Anna. The holiday is recognized as an official partial staffing holiday in Texas, meaning state offices remain open. Celebrations typically include an annual festival featuring a reenactment of the battle at its historical site. San Jacinto Day should not be confused with a similarly named holiday in Nicaragua, which commemorates a different event.
