Stephen Lawrence Day is observed in the United Kingdom every April 22 to honor the memory of Stephen Lawrence, a black teenager who was murdered in a racist attack in London in 1993. Born on September 13, 1974, Lawrence was a diligent student aspiring to become an architect. On the night of his death, he was attacked by a group of white youths at a bus stop, suffering fatal stab wounds. Despite initial investigations, charges against the main suspects were dropped due to insufficient evidence, leading Lawrence's family to pursue a private prosecution. In 2012, after a cold case review, two of the suspects were finally convicted. The day was officially designated as Stephen Lawrence Day by Prime Minister Theresa May during a memorial service in 2018, and it has been observed annually since 2019, serving as a remembrance of the impact of racism and the need for justice.
