Football Day is observed in Kazakhstan every year on April 25. This unofficial holiday commemorates the anniversary of the Football Union of Kazakhstan becoming a full member of UEFA in 2002. The origins of football in Kazakhstan date back to 1913-1914, with the formation of early teams in Semipalatinsk, now known as Semey. Notable figures in the early development of the sport include Mukhtar Auezov and Sabyrzhan Akhmedshin. Today, football is one of the most popular sports in the country, governed by the Kazakhstan Football Federation and the Professional Football League of Kazakhstan, which oversees three divisions: the Premier League, the First League, and the Second League. The main football tournaments include the national championship, the Kazakhstan Cup, and the Kazakhstan Super Cup. The Kazakhstan national football team represents the country in international competitions, although it has yet to qualify for a UEFA European Championship or a FIFA World Cup.
