The Death anniversary of Zhabdrung, known as Zhabdrung Kurchoe, is observed in Bhutan every year on April 26. This public holiday serves as a national day of mourning, commemorating Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan and founder of the Bhutanese state, who passed away in 1651. The observance takes place on the 4th day of the 10th month of the Bhutanese calendar, which corresponds to April or May in the Gregorian calendar. Historically, after Zhabdrung's death, local governors conspired to keep it a secret for 54 years to avoid a dynastic struggle, claiming he was on a silent retreat. Zhabdrung Rinpoche is buried in Punakha Dzong, a significant location in Bhutan. The day is marked by reflection on his contributions to the nation and the establishment of the dual system of government in Bhutan.
