Mujahideen Victory Day is observed in Afghanistan every April 28, commemorating the overthrow of the pro-Soviet Democratic Republic of Afghanistan in 1992. The day marks the 14th anniversary of the Saur Revolution, which led to the assassination of Prime Minister Mohammed Daoud Khan and the rise of the communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan. Following a rebellion by Afghan opposition groups, the Soviet Union intervened, resulting in a prolonged conflict between Soviet and Democratic Republic forces against the mujahideen, Islamic insurgent groups engaged in Jihad. On this day, the mujahideen ousted President Mohammad Najibullah, with Sibghatullah Mojaddedi becoming the new president. The holiday is primarily celebrated by former mujahideen and the Islamic population of Afghanistan, although some citizens oppose it due to its association with the onset of civil war. In 2012, festivities were canceled due to threats from Taliban insurgents.
