April 29: Day for the Foundation of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

The International Day for the Foundation of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is observed worldwide every year on April 29. This day commemorates the establishment of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which was created to implement the Chemical Weapons Convention and work towards the permanent destruction of chemical weapons. The OPCW was formally established when the convention entered into force on April 29, 1997, and it is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands. The day was initially recognized as the Day of Remembrance for All Victims of Chemical Warfare, reaffirming the commitment to eliminating chemical weapons. In 2015, the observance was officially renamed to highlight the foundation of the OPCW. The organization, which includes 193 member states, also conducts inspections of chemical weapons facilities and has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts in this area.
