April 4: Boganda Day (Central African Republic)

Boganda Day is observed in the Central African Republic on March 29 each year, commemorating the death anniversary of Barthélemy Boganda, the nation's first Prime Minister and a significant figure in its history. Born on April 4, 1910, Boganda was raised by Catholic missionaries after losing his parents in childhood. He became the first native Roman Catholic priest in the French colony of Central Africa and was elected to the National Assembly of France in 1946, where he campaigned against colonialism and racism. In 1949, he founded the Movement for the Social Evolution of Black Africa, and in 1958, he became the first Prime Minister of the Central African Republic's autonomous territory. Boganda died in a plane explosion on March 29, 1959, before witnessing the country's independence. His legacy as a national hero and martyr is honored through this public holiday, which reflects his contributions to the nation's democratic foundations.
