April 6: Kimbangu Day (Democratic Republic of the Congo)

Kimbangu Day is observed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo every April 6 to honor Simon Kimbangu, a significant religious leader known for his spiritual awakening and influential sermons that began in April 1921. The day commemorates the anniversary of his first sermon, which attracted thousands and promised liberation for black people, ultimately leading to his arrest by Belgian colonial authorities. Despite his imprisonment, Kimbanguism continued to grow, emerging as an organized church in the 1950s and officially recognized in 1959. The Kimbanguist Church, which is apolitical and follows Puritan ethics, has a claimed membership of around 6 million, though actual practicing members are estimated at about 300,000. Kimbanguism holds that Kimbangu was the Holy Spirit sent to Earth, with Nkamba regarded as the New Jerusalem.
