National Student-Athlete Day is observed annually on April 6 in the United States to celebrate the accomplishments of high school and college student-athletes and to encourage participation in sports. Established in 1987 by the Institute for Sport & Social Justice, this observance is co-sponsored by the NCAA and the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations). The day honors the academic and athletic achievements of student-athletes and their contributions to their schools and communities. Activities may include attending local high school or college games, promoting sports among youth, and supporting nonprofits that assist talented student-athletes from low-income families. In conjunction with the day, the Institute for Sport & Social Justice hosts the annual Giant Steps and Hall of Fame Gala, recognizing individuals who have significantly impacted high school and college athletics. Popular sports among high school male and female students include football, outdoor track and field, basketball, and soccer.
