April 7: Annunciation

The feast of Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is observed worldwide on March 25 in the Julian calendar, which corresponds to April 7 in the Gregorian calendar. This celebration is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church and commemorates the announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive the Son of God, to be named Jesus. The feast typically occurs during Great Lent, allowing the faithful to consume fish, oil, and wine, marking one of the two days during Lent when fish is permitted. In cases where Annunciation coincides with Holy Week, Easter Week, or Easter itself, the feast is celebrated without alteration, and a festal Divine Liturgy is held even on Good Friday. When Annunciation and Easter overlap, they are celebrated together, a phenomenon known as Kyriopascha.
