Deceased Submariners Remembrance Day is observed in Russia every April 7 to honor the memory of submariners who have died in service, particularly those who perished in the sinking of the K-278 Komsomolets submarine in 1989. The Komsomolets, a nuclear attack submarine of the Soviet Navy, suffered a catastrophic fire while submerged, leading to the loss of 42 of its 69 crew members. The day was initiated by the Komsomolets Nuclear Submarine Memorial Society, a charitable foundation established in 1992 to support the families of deceased submariners. Commemorative activities include wreath-laying ceremonies at monuments dedicated to fallen submariners, attended by servicemen, veterans, government officials, and family members. This remembrance day also acknowledges other tragic incidents, such as the Kursk submarine sinking in 2000, which resulted in the deaths of all 118 crew members on board.
