The battle, which took place in mid-August 1920, is often referred to as the “Miracle of the Vistula.” The holiday was first celebrated in 1920, discontinued under Communist rule in 1947, and revived in 1992 after Poland’s transition to democracy. As Armed Forces Day coincides with the Catholic feast of the Assumption, it is a non-working holiday marked by official speeches, military parades, church masses, and wreath-laying ceremonies at monuments and war memorials.
