National Alpaca Day is observed in Peru every August 1 to honor alpacas and highlight their economic significance. Established in 2012 by the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, the holiday recognizes the hard work of alpaca breeders and promotes the sale of alpaca products. Celebrations include festivals, fairs, exhibitions, and alpaca parades, with the largest events taking place in Puno and Macusani, known as “the Alpaca capital of the world.” Alpacas are native to the Andean regions and are primarily raised for their valuable fiber, which is used to create various textiles. Over 80% of the world's alpaca population resides in Peru, making it the leading producer of alpaca fiber globally.
