Marcus Garvey Day is observed in Jamaica every August 17 to honor Marcus Garvey, a prominent Jamaican-born political activist, orator, publisher, journalist, and entrepreneur who championed the rights of Afro-Jamaicans. Born in 1887 in Saint Ann’s Bay, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL), promoting the unification and empowerment of African-Americans and advocating for their repatriation to Africa. The day is marked with various activities, including a wreath-laying ceremony at National Heroes Park, patriotic lessons in schools, concerts, and other events. In 2012, the Jamaican government established this memorial day to commemorate Garvey's 125th birth anniversary. Garvey is recognized as Jamaica's first national hero, and his legacy continues to influence discussions on race and identity in the country.
