SATB2 Awareness Day, also known as SATB2-Associated Syndrome Awareness Day, is observed worldwide every August 22. The day aims to highlight the genetic condition caused by mutations in the SATB2 gene, which is crucial for embryonic development and affects multiple body systems. The SATB2 Gene Foundation and the SATB2 Trust UK established this awareness day, coinciding with the birthday of Dr. Yuri Zarate, a clinical geneticist who leads the only clinic in the U.S. specializing in SATB2-associated syndrome (SAS) at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. On this day, individuals are encouraged to learn about SAS, wear purple to symbolize awareness, and share information on social media using hashtags like #SATB2 and #SATB2Awareness. The main features of SAS include severe speech and language problems, abnormalities of the palate, and behavioral issues, among others. There is currently no cure for SAS, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life through various therapies and consultations with health professionals.
