Day of Songun is observed in North Korea every August 25 to honor the country's "military first" policy, which prioritizes the Korean People's Army in resource allocation and state affairs. Established in 2013 by Kim Jong-un, the holiday commemorates the beginning of the Songun era on August 25, 1960, when Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il visited the Seoul 105th Guards Armored Division HQ in Pyongyang. The Songun policy, which was officially declared after Kim Il-sung's death in 1994, was introduced by Kim Jong-il to consolidate power and gain military support. The day is marked with official speeches, solemn ceremonies, concerts, and other events that celebrate North Korea's military achievements, reflecting the military's central role in the government and society of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
