This religious holiday was established in 2011 by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill, following a proposal from a group of churches to his predecessor, Sam Abal. The first celebration took place on August 15, 2011, just days before the holiday itself. On this day, people gather in churches to pray and seek forgiveness for the wrongs committed by their nation. The observance is supported by both Christian and Muslim communities, although the latter emphasizes that repentance should not be confined to a single day each year. Ceremonies are held across the country, with a notable gathering in the capital, Port Moresby, attended by national and church leaders as well as representatives from various provinces.
