August 26: WebMistress Day (United States)

National WebMistress Day is observed worldwide every August 26 to recognize women in web development and encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM fields. Established in 2016 by Kat Valentine, who coined the term "webmistress" after acquiring the domain name WebMistress.com in 1995, the day aims to legitimize this feminine job title. The term "webmaster," first used in 1986, encompasses various roles in web development, including web designer, developer, and administrator. Despite the historical contributions of women in programming, the field remains male-dominated, leading to misconceptions about the gender of webmasters. On this day, individuals are encouraged to celebrate webmistresses by sharing their stories on social media using the hashtag #nationalWEBMISTRESSday and to support organizations that promote STEM education for women.
