August 27: Pharmacy Day (Iran)

Pharmacy Day, also known as Pharmacist Day, is observed in Iran every year on August 27. This professional holiday commemorates the birthday of Abū Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariyyā al-Rāzī, a prominent Persian physician and philosopher whose contributions significantly influenced the development of pharmacy as a science. Razi, known in the Western world as Rhazes, introduced various pharmaceutical practices and apparatus in his works, which were translated into Latin and shaped medical education in the Latin West. The celebration of Pharmacy Day highlights the importance of the pharmaceutical industry in Iran, which began its development in 1921 with the establishment of the Pasteur Institute of Iran in Tehran. Today, there are over 90 pharmaceutical companies in the country, with a significant portion controlled by a holding company affiliated with the Ministry of Welfare.
