The Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site Closure Anniversary is observed in Kazakhstan every August 29 to commemorate the closure of one of the largest nuclear test sites in the Soviet Union. Established by the government in 2019, the anniversary honors those who suffered from radiation exposure due to the over 450 nuclear tests conducted at the site from 1949 to 1989. The first successful test occurred on August 29, 1949, with the detonation of the RDS-1 nuclear bomb. The anniversary is marked by a remembrance ceremony at the Stronger than Death memorial in Semey, formerly known as Semipalatinsk, where thousands gather to pay tribute to the victims of radiation. The movement for closure was significantly driven by the Nevada – Semipalatinsk international anti-nuclear movement, which successfully campaigned for the test site’s closure in 1991.
