The Slovak National Uprising Anniversary is observed in Slovakia every August 29, commemorating the day in 1944 when Slovaks rose against Nazi Germany. This public holiday marks the beginning of an armed uprising organized by the Slovak resistance movement to resist the fascist occupation and overthrow the collaborating government of Jozef Tiso. Although the uprising was ultimately suppressed by German forces by October 28, 1944, guerrilla warfare continued until the full liberation of Slovakia. The uprising resulted in significant casualties, with over 5,000 innocent people killed and buried in 211 mass graves.
