August 30: Pinaglabanan Day (Philippines)

Pinaglabanan Day is observed in San Juan, Metro Manila, Philippines, every August 30. This special non-working holiday commemorates the Battle of San Juan del Monte, the first major battle of the Philippine Revolution, which occurred in 1896. The battle was initiated by members of the Katipunan, a revolutionary organization aiming to overthrow Spanish colonial rule. Despite suffering heavy losses, the battle played a crucial role in spreading resistance across the country. Celebrations include a flag-raising ceremony, a wreath-laying ceremony at the Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine, and a 21-gun salute to honor the revolutionary heroes. The shrine, built in 1976, features a brass sculpture called the Spirit of Pinaglabanan and is located near the former site of a Spanish gunpowder depot. Pinaglabanan Day occurs just five days after National Heroes’ Day, which honors all heroes of the Philippine Revolution.
