August 30: Press Freedom Day (Philippines)

National Press Freedom Day is observed in the Philippines every August 30 to promote, protect, and safeguard the right to freedom of the press as granted by the Philippine Constitution. The day was officially established by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2022 to commemorate the birthday of Marcelo H. del Pilar, a prominent figure in Philippine journalism and the founder of the newspaper Diariong Tagalog, which advocated for government reform and denounced the abuses of Spanish friars. Events and activities for this occasion are coordinated by the Department of Education, the Commission of Higher Education, and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, focusing on educating the public about the rights and responsibilities of journalists and the importance of press freedom. While National Press Freedom Day serves as a working holiday, it has faced criticism for perceived hypocrisy given the Duterte administration's controversial stance on press freedom. Additionally, there is another related observance, National Campus Press Freedom Day, celebrated on July 25.
