International Whale Shark Day is observed worldwide every August 30. Established in 2012, this day aims to highlight the endangered status of the whale shark, the largest known extant fish species, which can reach lengths of up to 72 feet. The celebration includes various events and awareness campaigns organized by conservation organizations to educate the public about the whale shark's biological role and the threats it faces, particularly from fishing in South and Southeast Asia. Despite being classified as endangered, the total number of whale sharks remains unclear, with estimates suggesting only about a thousand individuals may be left. The decline in their population is attributed to illegal fishing practices, although many countries have implemented bans on the capture and trade of these gentle giants.
