August 31: Romanian Language Day (Romania)

Romanian Language Day, observed worldwide every August 31, celebrates the Romanian language and its significance in national identity. The holiday coincides with National Language Day in Moldova, where Romanian is the official language. The origins of the celebration trace back to Moldova, where a language law adopted on August 31, 1989, replaced the Cyrillic script with the Latin alphabet. The Moldovan government declared this date as National Language Day in 1990, and the holiday was later proposed in Romania to highlight the importance of the Romanian language. Officially recognized in Romania in 2013, the day is marked by various cultural and educational events organized by public and private institutions, including Romanian cultural organizations abroad. In Romania, the state flag is flown to commemorate the occasion.
