Single Working Women’s Day is observed worldwide every August 4 to highlight the contributions of single working women, whose roles have historically been underestimated. Established in 2006 by Barbara Payne, the day arose from a conversation among friends about the lack of recognition for single women compared to holidays celebrating parents and couples. The holiday aims to celebrate the hard work, courage, and resilience of single women, including those who manage their careers, household responsibilities, and sometimes parenting, all independently. Participants are encouraged to celebrate by treating themselves to enjoyable activities, such as spa days or dining out, and to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #SingleWorkingWomensDay. The day also addresses the challenges single working women face, including discrimination in the workplace due to both sexism and "singlism," a term coined by Bella DePaulo to describe bias against single individuals.
