Vassa, also known as Buddhist Lent or Rains Retreat, is observed in Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand every year, beginning on the day following the full moon of the eighth lunar month, typically starting in July and ending in October. This three-month retreat is a significant period for practitioners of Theravada Buddhism, during which monks and nuns traditionally remain within temple grounds and monasteries, dedicating their time to meditation. While common people may not be able to spend the entire period in meditation due to work commitments, they often observe Vassa by abstaining from smoking, alcohol, and meat, or by adopting other ascetic practices. Vassa follows Asalha Puja, one of the most important holidays in Theravada Buddhism, marking a time for prayer, reflection, and spiritual growth.
