Ice Hockey Day is observed in Russia every December 1, celebrating one of the country's most popular winter sports. The holiday was initiated by Vladislav Tretiak, a prominent ice hockey player and coach for the Soviet Union national team from 1964 to 1984. The first organized indoor hockey game occurred in Montreal in 1875, and ice hockey gained popularity in Europe in the early 20th century, leading to the founding of the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1908. The first ice hockey game in the Soviet Union took place in 1932, with the official birthday of Russian hockey marked as December 22, 1946, when the Soviet Championship League commenced. The Soviet national team, known as the “Red Machine,” dominated world championships from 1954 to 1991 and secured numerous Olympic medals. Established in 2007, Ice Hockey Day aims to promote and develop ice hockey within Russia.
